Exploring TECO’s High Voltage Motor Solutions
Posted on November 13, 2025
TECO is a globally renowned leader in the medium and high voltage (hv) motor market, with more than half a century supporting some of the world’s most challenging applications. TECO’s offering covers all of the major high-voltage motor technologies and industries. From synchronous to wound-rotor (slip ring), and squirrel cage.
1. TECO Synchronous Motors
TECO Synchronous Motors can be found globally in various industries. It is common to come across a TECO Synchronous Motor in the timber industry on a chipper, on a refiner in the pulp and paper sector, a ball mill or sag mill at a mine site, or even operating as synchronous generators in the electric utility sector.
Key Advantage: Power Factor Correction
A major benefit of selecting a synchronous motor is their leading power factor that supplies kVAR to counteract the typical lagging power factor end users may be penalised on due to large amounts of inductive loads onsite.
Custom Design and Manufacturing
TECO Synchronous Machines are custom designed to meet the project requirements and manufactured at our TECO-Westinghouse Motor Company facility in Round Rock, Texas.
TECO-Westinghouse synchronous machines use a premium mica-based insulation system Thermalastic® developed inhouse at Westinghouse and has over 50-years of history in the market and under continuous development for use in TECO-Westinghouse machines.
For more information on synchronous machines, see here.
2. TECO Wound Rotor Induction Motors (WRIM)
TECO Wound Rotor Induction Motors (WRIM), also known as Slip Ring Motors, are a cornerstone of heavy industry across Australia and New Zealand. From refineries, to sugar processing, cement manufacturing, to mining and metals industries; TECO wound rotor motors are proven workhorses with references in the challenging AU/NZ markets dating back to 1983. TECO employs a team of engineers locally to work with customers to customise our WRIM products to suit each individual application or end user site requirement.
High Starting Torque Capabilities
Due to the nature of WRIM’s they are able to produce higher starting torques when compared with a standard SCIM setup and as a result they are routinely selected for new installations of difficult to start loads such as mills.
Customisation and Local Engineering Support
TECO’s factory flexibility and expertise allows for customisation in many elements such as cooling methods (TEAAC, TEWAC, and TEFC), frame sizes, ambient temperature ratings, brush lifting, and many other specific requirements.
3. Medium and High Voltage Squirrel Cage Induction Motors (SCIM)
TECO Medium and High Voltage Squirrel Cage Induction Motors (SCIM) are found in every corner of industry. MV and HV SCIM’s have a lot of benefits; their relative simplicity from a maintenance perspective, flexibility and options for starting methods, and their overall cost effectiveness from new installation project budgets through the whole lifecycle of the machine. TECO Australia and New Zealand have a long history supplying and supporting our MV and HV SCIM’s across the immediate Oceania region, and further afield to mine sites in several other continents.
4. What Sets TECO Apart: Local Expertise
What really sets TECO apart in the Medium and High Voltage motor space, is not just the vast flexibility in product, but the team that has been supporting local Oceania industry for over 40 years.
Application Knowledge and Custom Solutions
The application knowledge of the TECO sales and engineering teams separates TECO from the competition. TECO’s local team are able to go as far as designing drop-in replacements for other brand motors, identifying and matching critical elements such as foot bolt hole positions, terminal box locations, and shaft sizes. The TECO team is able to take it a step further, working with customers to understand the complete installation, goals of the project, and specific site challenges to engineer custom solutions for each MV and HV motor produced.
