RSXi Soft Starters

Our RSXi gives fixed-speed motor applications controlled starting and stopping in a compact package. With 18–200 A nominal selections, closed-loop two-phase control and an internal bypass, it suits rural pumping, compact motor-control centres and replacement of direct-on-line or star-delta starting where advanced adaptive control and active braking are not required.

Straightforward control and protection

We provide current-limit and current-ramp starting, voltage-ramp soft stopping, rotary adjustment controls and LED status indication. Integrated protection covers motor overload, excess start time, phase loss and sequence, current imbalance, motor connection faults, instantaneous overcurrent, motor thermistors and line frequency. These functions do not remove the need for correctly designed grounding, isolation and branch-circuit protection; the starter is not short-circuit proof.

The bypass reduces running losses: the manual gives 10 W typical during run and 3 W per ampere during starting. The published operational life is 1,000,000 operations for RSXi-018–100, but 30,000 for RSXi-140–200. Our run-state harmonic statement concerns bypassed operation, not an assurance of zero harmonics during starting or across the entire installation.

Match supply and starting duty

V4 covers 200–440 VAC and V6 covers 200–575 VAC, both three-phase with +10%/−15% mains tolerance in the manual. C1 has separate 110–240 VAC and 380–440 VAC control connections; C2 is 24 VAC/VDC. Do not treat the two C1 ranges as one continuous control-voltage range.

All 11 website selections and their V4/C1-named PDF associations are retained. The model field inside those sheets omits C1, and their application voltage, motor size/FLC and start-duty fields are blank. The family specification is not a completed application selection.

Choose against motor full-load current, starting-current multiple, start duration, off-time, ambient temperature and altitude. For example, the manual's RSXi-200 row is 200 A at 40°C for AC53b 4-6:594 below 1,000 m, but 165 A at 40°C for the longer-start 4-20:580 condition. A nominal “200 A” listing is not a rating for every duty.

Panel design and options

The manual specifies IP20 for RSXi-018–100 and IP00 for RSXi-140–200. Optional finger guards reach IP20 only with the stated cable-size conditions. Allow the source-specified clearances; side mounting requires 15% current derating. Side-by-side mounting without clearance is conditional on no communication modules being fitted.

Options include a remote operator, communication modules and PC software. The manual lists Profinet, Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP, Profibus, DeviceNet, Modbus RTU and USB; only one communication module is supported at a time. Ethernet modules are not suitable with 380/440 VAC control voltage. The remote operator provides status/current/temperature monitoring, trip display, control and a 4–20 mA motor-current output. The software's network scope is up to 254 starters with the required interface fitted.

Commissioning and service

Use our complete 20-page user manual for safety (PDF 4), mounting (5–6), power/control connections (7–9), adjustments (10–11), trip diagnosis/reset (12–14), accessories (15), specifications (16–18) and semiconductor fuses (19). The tables below retain those operating conditions and source links.

Set motor FLC from the motor nameplate. The current-ramp time does not set the exact time to full speed; setting motor trip class to Off disables motor-overload protection. Power-factor-correction capacitors must be on the input side. Control terminals can be at phase potential: installation and service require qualified personnel and complete isolation.

Source differences

The model sheets label semiconductor fuses Type 1 and HRC fuses Type 2; the manual expressly associates its listed semiconductor fuses with Type 2 coordination. We retain that contradiction for confirmation—do not select protection from the conflicting shorthand. The manual's 5 kA and 10 kA short-circuit ratings are conditional on the listed fuses, not unrestricted standalone ratings.

The model sheet's 50/60 Hz ±10% wording differs from the manual's 45–66 Hz at start and separate frequency-trip behaviour. Keep operating range and trip thresholds distinct. Historical certification/EMC statements remain source claims, including the sheet's directive wording; they have not been independently re-certified here.

1 1 Current Ramp
Select the initial start current (A) and ramp
time (B).
Current ramp starting extends the time
soft starter takes to reach the current limit
and is suitable for generator set supplies,
loads requiring an extended start time or
applications with extreme load variation
between starts.
The ramp time does not control the time
the motor will take to reach full speed.
Current
Time
2 2 Current Limit
Select the current limit (C).
The current limit is the maximum level of
current the soft starter will deliver to the
motor during the soft start.
Current
Time
3 3 Motor Trip Class
Select the trip class for motor overload
protection.
The trip class reflects the maximum time
(in seconds) that the motor can run at
locked rotor current. The Motor Trip Class
setting assumes a locked rotor current of
600%.
Setting the motor trip class to "Off"
disables motor overload protection.

CENTER PIVOT IRRIGATORS

 Program irrigation times using Weekly Calendar Function.
 Prevent pump from damage due to low water levels.
 Detect burst or blocked pipe work.
 Monitor operation in pumping and electrical units from a single screen.
 Operators can collect and share trip data using the MI-START mobile app.

TRAVELLING IRRIGATOR

 Control operation using Pressure Control mode and avoid trips to the pump shed.
Connecting the irrigator to main water supply line “wakes” the pump and starts
irrigation. When the irrigator reaches the end of the travel and the pump stops and
enters “sleep mode” awaiting the next connection.
 Prevent pump from damage due to low water levels.
 Detect burst or blocked pipe work before further damage occurs.
 Monitor operation in pumping and electrical units from a single screen.
 Operators can collect and share trip data using the MI-START mobile app.

BOOSTER PUMPS

 Automatically control operation using Pressure Control mode.
Low pressure will “wake” the pump and increase flow/pressure. High pressure will
return the pump to the “sleep” mode.
 Detect burst or blocked pipe work before further damage occurs.
 Protect against over-pressure that may damage pipes.
 Monitor operation in pumping and electrical units from a single screen.

SUMP PUMPING

 Automatically control level (auto-empty)
Increasing level will trigger pump operation until minimum level is attained.
 Prevent pump from damage due to low water levels.
 Monitor operation in pumping and electrical units from a single screen
 Operators can collect and share fault data using the MI-START mobile app.

WATER TOWERS

 Automatically control level (auto-fill)
Decreasing level will trigger pump operation until maximum level is attained.
 Monitor operation and level in pumping and electrical units from a single screen
 Operators can collect and share fault data using the MI-START mobile app.
