Low Voltage Motor Industries & Applications

Popular and a lot more cost-effective than high voltage motors, a low voltage motor is ideal for a range of applications such as:

How to Select a Low Voltage Electric Motor?

Unsure about whether a low voltage electric motor is suitable for your specific needs? Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you select the right motor for your application.

  1. Always begin by determining the exact voltage requirement of your application. This will help you decide whether a low, medium, or high voltage electric motor is the right fit.
  2. Now, access the environment your electric motor device will be used in. Factors such as the temperature and altitude may impact motor performance. This will help you select a low voltage motor designed to specifically accommodate such needs.
  3. Next, if you have multiple motor options to choose from, take into consideration performance characteristics. This includes the motor’s size, weight, installation requirements, cost, and control system.
  4. Can’t find what you need? TECO’s Mod Shop offers in-house modification capabilities. Our team is able to craft a custom low voltage motor solution designed to meet the needs of your exact application.
  5. Require further assistance? Consider booking a one-on-one consultation with our expert team for a personalised solution.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the difference between high kV and low kV electric motors?

In terms of mechanical build, a low kV electric motor has more windings of a thinner wire, and each wire carries more volts at a reduced amp. In contrast, a high kV electric motor has fewer winds of a much thicker wire, and each wire carries more amps at a lower voltage.

In essence, this means that a low kV motor produces more torque at a reduced speed while a high kV motor produces less torque at a higher speed.

Can you run a low voltage electric motor with high voltage?

No, you cannot run a low voltage motor with a high voltage as it may cause equipment damage and pose a hazard to surrounding applications leading to potential fires and electric shocks.

What is the Australian standard for low voltage electric motors?

The AS/NZS 1359.5:2004 is the current standard that governs the manufacturing and usage of low voltage electric motors. Within Australia, low voltage means a nominal voltage exceeding 50V but not more than 1000V on an AC motor.
